A lesson to learn from the Suarez situation

Melwood LFCWITHOUT any doubt the story of the summer transfer window has been Luis Suarez’s expression of his desire to leave Liverpool FC.

In the immediate aftermath of the Branislav Ivanovic incident there were a small section of the Liverpool fans that immediately called out for the club to sell its best player citing a number of reasons as to why he must be sold.

A few days after the incident when Suarez was handed a ten match ban a significant majority of the Anfield faithful sympathised with him, as they viewed the ban to be a bit too harsh.

Fast forward three months later and opinion on Merseyside has shifted significantly with the majority of the fans saying Suarez must be sold so that the club can move on quickly.

There have been a lot of developments in the three months between the biting incident versus Chelsea on the 21st of April and today.

First was Suarez’s declaration that he would find it hard to turn down Spanish giants Real Madrid citing the unfair treatment he gets from the British media as the main reason as to why he want to leave Merseyside. Suarez openly flirted with Madrid but, the Spanish side did not submit a bid for the Uruguayan. At that stage the majority of the fans still sympathised with him despite him openly publicly expressing his desire to join Madrid, as they view the media as being a bit overly critical of Suarez.

Then came the moment when Arsenal submitted a formal bid for Suarez, no one thought that the Uruguay international will be interested in moving to another English club as he wanted to escape from the British press. Suarez immediately expressed his desire to join the Gunners much to the dismay of the Liverpool fans.

The fans chanted Luis’ name in the games vs Melbourne Victory, Thailand’s national team and Olympiakos but the Uruguayan did not show any appreciation, he also was the only member of the first team not to attend captain Steven Gerrard’s testimonial dinner, raising a few eyebrows.

As if this was not enough, Suarez used the same British media he despised before to try and push for a move to Arsenal claiming that there is an amendment to his contract that allows him to leave for a side playing in the UEFA Champions League. Suarez personally approached the Guardian for the interview and this did not go down well with the fans and the management, coach Brendan Rodgers has also had enough. The interview clearly infuriated the coach among the things that Rodgers said was “there has been a total disrespect of the club – a club that has given him everything”.

The club has rightly given Suarez everything as they would have given any other player but, maybe they have given him too much.

Club legend John Barnes somewhat foretold what lay ahead in the aftermath of Suarez being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra:

“If he believes it’s all about him then I believe we could have a situation that we saw with Torres”.

The club risked its reputation for one individual by supporting him during the period after the Evra incident, even going to the extent of warming up in t-shirts showing support for the Uruguayan, this was one of the reasons why Kenny Dalglish lost his job.

From that period Suarez may have seen himself as the man who makes Anfield tick. Rodgers has been more strict this time around and has even instructed Suarez to train alone. Unless a miracle happens Luis Suarez will not be wearing the Liverpool FC jersey next season and the club has learned the hard way that pampering a playing does not directly translate to loyalty.

All the attention during pre-season has shifted to one player which is by no means good and the club should do its best to make sure that such a thing does not happen in the future.

Lesson? Play hardball. Get as much as we can , get shot of him. Biting people , creating incidents to push for a transfer etc are very unpleasant .

Why on earth would Rogers be stupid enough to demand an apology in these circumstances.

Every day that Suarez doesn’t apologise (and he wont) gives the Press the chance to stir the situation and cause more trouble.

“Keep it in House “is the “Liverpool Way” Brendan.

U should know suarez has a game plan and lfc are just playin along.luis shld just hand in a transfer request instead of prostituting all over the place…suarez needs a little weep but it wil only get ugly b4 it gets better.

BR wants to show who is boss . That he is in control of the situation. If Suarez doesn’t apologise it will make BR look bad .

      • Liam says:

Rodgers doesnt need any help in looking bad . He reminds me more of Steve kean every day

This is all being spun to make Suarez look bad and the club look good, its as simple as that. Suarez gave us nearly 3 seasons of high energy, passionate, skilful performances, he was still running and hustling when most of the others had given up or not even bothered to get going, Rodgers would have looked even worse than his pathetic display in both the league and cups highlighted, if Suarez had not been here, fans talk about loyalty and respect, then in the same breath they trash their talisman suarez over what the bent newspapers and manager who has a long list of LIES to his name, have to say. We have let more players go than we have actually signed, this pre-season but apparently we are stronger. Its this kind of thinking that makes me realise that the kids have taken over the fan-base. BR should thank Suarez for keeping him his own job last season. I support the Entity that is LIVERPOOL FC , and not ten a penny manager or money-mad owners. As some so rightly say NO ONE MAN IS BIGGER THAN THE CLUB…………..INCLUDING BRENDAN.

suarez should be banned from football for one year. that could be a loss in term of his footballing ability but can help him to grow as a person. no player can be bigger than club and if you think so you walk alone

  • Chico says:

If I was Rodgers I will blank Suarez completely, I will tell the press that it not important talking about Suarez when I have a team of 23 members, let him train alone, don’t select him on the squad after the ban, don’t have any discussion with him regarding his transfer, if he want to move he have handle a transfer request, ignore arsenal approach, the player is not for sale it up to them leave with that or report them FA for inciting a player to joint them without talking to Liverpool, Arsenal and Liverpool are giving Suarez a big head, he will do the same thing to arsenal and force his way to Chelsea or Man city, Brendan is not very wise, don’t even ask him to apologise, make him less important is just we don’t want to sell you to Aresnal, we don’t want to keep because you are too good, but if any team from abroad make a offer even of 20m we will sell you, now shut up and continue to train, keep him training until January without playing; he will apologise, stupid player and both managers showing to Suarez that both teams are o desperate that we will fight to you; messiah. Sad day for English football

If Suarez wants to leave the club he should do the proper thing and that is to hand in his transfer request. If the right offer comes in for him and the club rejects the offer he has the right to officially lodge a complain to FIFA . Both sides make mistakes in this situation . They should sit down and talk directly to one another and let each other know their position instead of talking to the press. If Suarez does stay I am afraid that it will become another Tevez situation. Bad publicity for everyone concern. No wonder more senior players are thinking of leaving the club. I really hope Agger will stay.

  • Faz says:

Suarez reminds me of Tevez! Eventually he will come beg for gameplay as the world cup is at the doorstep!
