The Daily Post reports that Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, has unleashed a blast from the past by bringing former Reds Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones back to the club to assist in coaching the Academy ranks.
The three, who accumulated nearly 1,000 appearances for Liverpool between them, will be overseeing the progress of the Under-21 and Under-18s in their Kirby training ground.
Rodgers said of the move: “Sometimes managers feel the need to distance themselves from players like that but I love what this institution is all about at Liverpool.
“I want to protect that great history to ensure these players get the opportunity to be involved at a club they love.”
Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, who retired last season, had long been touted for a coaching capacity once he hung up his boots, however Carragher instead opted to go into television – becoming a pundit for Sky Sports.
Rodgers said: “We lost a true great in Jamie Carragher (who retired to become a television pundit) this summer and you need people around who love the club dearly.
“If you look throughout the club now, we have lots of staff from this area. We have Mike Marsh on the staff with the first team – a local boy who came through and played for the first team.
“Getting the likes of Robbie, Steve and Rob involved is all part of that. They offer wisdom, they have played at the top level and they also understand what playing for Liverpool Football Club is all about.”
Excellent acquistions. Motivation and skill is a combination that most clubs try to inculcate in their players. With these players arround our younger crop will certainoy impact positively on the overall performance of the club.
good idea and while they are at it they should dig up bill shankley so he can tell the current crop what’s its like to win a league
This is a farce, although Robbie and Macca were terrific players they couldnt be trusted at this level, remember McAterr at Tranmere? BR is on a PR stunt by bringing ex Reds in.
