Signing Of Mata Proves Reds Are Still Way Behind

Juan-MataWhile Liverpool toil away to sign a player that they’ve been ‘monitoring’ since early in November, Manchester United will likely have signed the best midfielder in the English Premier League by the time you read this article.

Juan Mata has – as of Friday evening – seemingly agreed a huge deal to move to league holders Manchester United, a move which has probably equally baffled people, whilst causing no shortage of envy. That goes double for Liverpool fans, I’d imagine.

Because while we’d shown brief interest in Mata, it seemed unlikely that we’d be able to make a successful move for the little Spanish genius until we could offer Champions League football and also offer a ridiculous sum of money to a club unwilling to sell to clubs they considered rivals.

But as the season has progressed, Liverpool have emerged as genuine contenders for a top-4 spot, or possibly even a title contender. Despite a shaky run over Christmas and into the New Year, Liverpool would surely be a more promising move for a player of Mata’s calibre; able to offer guaranteed first-team football whilst looking likely to qualify for next season’s elite competition.

The greatest confusion over Mata’s move to Utd is the clubs’ current predicament sees them in their worst position for decades and seemingly on the decline. There is no doubt Mata will strengthen the club, gain first-team football and likely make Spain’s World Cup squad but the chances are, not even he will be enough to haul Man United into next season’s Champions League.

Sadly, Liverpool’s biggest stumbling block either appears to be a lack of funds or – more likely – a lack of any willingness to pay what the club’s owners consider ‘over the odds’ for any player. In the instance of a player such as Mata, there should be no such things as paying over the odds.

The example set in the Salah debacle shows that, in terms of the transfer market, and negotiating great transfer deals to the club, Liverpool are still miles behind their rivals and that is what is likely to see them fail, not just in this window, but also in making the top-4 as I just can not see the club being able to significantly add any quality to the side that will help us keep up with only 7 days to go.

I mean, if we’re incapable of closing a deal that we’ve been working on since November, how in God’s name do we stand a chance of being able to sort out a deal or two before the window closes in 7 days time?

The Egyptian forwards likely destination, Chelsea, have shown that money is of no object but they’ve also shown that the most likely way to sign your top targets is to meet the club’s asking price, or at the very least, don’t offer such derisory sums below their asking price that they start touting their player around Europe.

For the past 10-15 years Liverpool have missed out on numerous targets through dragging their heels or refusing to budge from their opening offers and sadly, that is likely to see us have one of our most disappointing transfer windows in some time. All we can do, as fans, is hope that that doesn’t have the knock-on effect of levelling our hopes of qualifying for Europe’s biggest attraction.

They prob don’t trust BR after wasting 15millions on Allen . 15m !!!!!!! He is not worth 1 .

  • Diego 'digger' Souness says:

Just watching the Chelsea match and all their players are big and strong unlike the waifs, midgets & wimps BR keeps signing. SMH

    • Feargal says:

They buy top players : we buy cheap sh*te no one else wants
      -they have top manager too

      • Aaron says:

They are also owned by a guy who has money to burn treating his club as his big boys toy, also they are regularly in Champions League, so two massive reasons why players go there instead of here.

Imagine if at the age of 39 in his first real big role (second season) Mourinho was classified as useless.. Cut forward to now he’s done a excellent job with his career but it had to start somewhere. Comparing JM now with BR now to ‘prove’ your point is naive.

If you were a player and you had the chance to win the league by joining City, Chelsea, Utd and outside chance Arsenal…. Why would you choose Liverpool? Because history, I think not. Only Alan Shearer has been that stupid.

Until we win the league we will always be a cup team, no matter how much that hurts and no matter who owns the club.

If you count the PL inception as year zero, our record is ok, missing a couple of league titles, FSG can’t be blamed for that, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself to the contrary.

Aaron the troll bores everyone . All he does all day is troll other peoples comments . He talks childish nonsense . Dont feed the troll

        • Diego 'digger' Souness says:

You still dont get it do you? If FSG & BR dont want to compete at the top then why dont they take their soft-asses elsewhere. We are Liverpool, the greatest club in English football. Deal with it.

          • Aaron says:

Let’s try and deal with living in the present first, not dwelling on the past. Baby steps Digger, baby steps.

          • tr0ll hunter says:

ignore the boring troll diego . No one is interested in what he says . He is just a troll

        • edaw says:

Those players what we call “glory hunters”.
And look what have they been now?
          RvP? Torres? Owen?
Yes, they got trophies but never been a great personal in their former or recent club.

          • Aaron says:

What’s wrong with being a glory hunter, as a player, that’s what you live for. Surely if you are ambitious you’d sign for teams with a chance of winning silverware, sadly that rules us out.

it doesn’t always go to plan, but they have one career, we can support the team long after players come and go.

Personally it would be a travesty for Steven Gerrard not to win the PL, he almost left us to achieve that…. And who could have blamed him!

          • tr0ll hunter says:

            Yawn .

            The troll is still trolling

            Idiot

  • stevie says:

We have a lot of promising players at the club. The points of view stated here depend on whether you can wait for these talents to flourish or whether you want to rush for the cheque book. Fsg are certainly careful with money but can you blame them after 35m spent on carroll? They don’t deserve the slating some people give them on this site. I’m still grateful they saved our club from oblivion

    • Aaron says:

Boom! Common sense has just entered the discussion.

Good man Stevie…. er.. You’re not a stooge are ya?

      • tr0ll hunter says:

Idiot troll aaron writes comments under different names and then agrees with himself . Sad troll

      • stevie says:

Common sense seems to be in short supply on this site. The sooner people realise that fsg will continue to run the club prudently the better. Personally I do not want us to become citeh as they stand for everything I hate in the modern game

About 50 from Liverpool fans not happy with the clowns that are running our club
And about 35 from the fool ‘aaron’ talking bollojks as usual

‘aaron’ has made a complete t!t out of himself. Again . Ha ha ha ha .

This site keeps on getting funnier

    • Aaron says:

I’m only here to counter the ‘hate campaign’ against people who saved the club.

Like any coin there is more than one side. Anyone being real or even more accurately has a higher IQ than 11 understands that.

by power of deduction that rules out @realist. Who I’m going second guess will retort with low level humour, vaguely funny but barely football related, as usual.

Strange, most of the people commenting today were absent when we were sat top at Christmas! Strange indeed.

      • realist says:

Ha ga ha ha haaaaaaaa ha. What a pathetic little fool aaron is . Talks total boolocks and hasn’t a clue what is going on at our club.

Aaron one man crusade to defend the dirty scimbags that own our club . Ha ha ha ha . Every day he makes a complete fool of himself but its as funny as fluck

What next ? Go on aaron . Tell us again how wonderful Joe Allen is . Ha ha ha haaaaaaaa haaaaaaaa ha ha ha haaaaaaaa .

All everyone does is laugh at the clown, so keep em coming we need a laugh , ha ha ha ha

      • Diego 'digger' Souness says:

LOL, hate campaign? Are we guilty of hate because we LOVE our club? You have got it so badly wrong its untrue.

        • Aaron says:

Yes you are guilty of hate, pure and simple.

Love the club or not you are vilifying the very people who saved us and because they are not splashing the cash big and fastest enough for you, you say they are impotent, using worse tones..

Because I and others are not as rash as the masses on this site, we are labelled stooges, deluded, blind etc bla blah blah blah blah.

If I’m wrong I’ll hold my hands up but to predict the outcome of something that has not even reached the halfway stage is rash, who at half time would have staked £1000 on Liverpool losing to Milan, look how that turned out. The team is progressing slowly, owners infinitely better than H&G but have been tarred with the same brush.

      • tr0ll hunter says:

Idiot aaron has no life . All he does is troll .

        He is so boring

  • clyde says:

i dont want us to be like city or chelsea! we need to live within our means, and make sensible purchases.

that being said, i do want us to get someone in January…our squad is thin…at least one proper defensive midfielder…but if we can, a left back or right back too would be nice! we need more reinforcement in defense, not attack..would happily brush aside this salah fiasco if we land one solid DM…

as for the owners, im happy with what they seem to be trying to do, which is to build a successful and sustainable business / football model..they seem to be going about things cautiously, and i cant blame them..its a high risk industry, and mistakes, big ones, have been made before..while i admire city’s firepower, they went and spent silly money buying all the best players in the world they could get…im pleased that liverpool are competing without having to do the same..

we do need a few more signings to bridge the gap at the top though, and there is something that needs to be done about us constantly losing the players we want to our PL rivals, but a change in ownership is not it..fsg have come across to me at least as careful, analytical, and responsible, and id give them time to fix this..theyre still learning the ropes a little, but learning they most definitely are!

  • George Owolabi says:

We need two quality midfielders, a central and defensive midfielder. At least we are in top 4 and we need to fight off Man United, Everton and Spurs. We can’t afford not to sign this January as our squad is very thin.

  • Dan says:

Anyone can surely see what foikers FSG are , pure evil . Here to rake in cash with little or no care for our long term future.

And you would have to be mighty stupid to say FSG saved us , they did NOT SAVE US . Liverpool were never in serious danger , anyone who understands business will tell you that

FSG have done everything in the interests of FSG , we are simply an asset. There will be NO stadium until the go , NO serious investment in the team . Liverpool are dead while these prjcks own our club

  • liverpool fan says:

FSG OUT . No more to be said 😐

Probably 40 of those by ‘aaron’

In our weekly survey people were asked “are FSG good owners”

49 people said NO .FSG out please
2 people said yes (aaron and aaron using a different name)

Is Joe Allen a wonderful player ?
49 people said NO don’t be stupid
    1 said yah (aaron)

49 people (plus everyone else in the world , especially those that know him ) voted “aaron’ to be a moron

3 people (aaron and aaron using different names) vote that all the other posters on here are not ‘true’ Liverpool fans because we dont worship FSG and w*nk over topless posters of Joe Allen

    Ha ha ha ha

    • Liam says:

      LOL . Well said

      • Aaron says:

Realist. Most people said they were afraid of Nelson Mandela being released from prison because his past activities, the S. Africans, Tory’s etc. Now I’m no expert but all.. ALL were PROVEN wrong!!

Being outnumbered on some poxy defeatist website, supported by poxy defeatists matters very little to me.

People said we would never improve with BR or FSG, ALL have neen proven wrong, progress is clearly evident. People hated Lucas when he first signed and first couple of seasons ALL have been proven wrong. A lot of people wanted Suarez outta this club pre season ALL have been proven wrong.

So Realist, what exactly is the point your trying to make? It’s certainly not very clear to me. Using the votes of comments on this, most negative of fan sites, against those who can’t be bothered or air their views on more positive sites such as Liverpool Offside proves what? Negative people back negative comments….

And the GOLD medal goes to @ Realist, awesome argument, I will certainly bow down to your superhuman ability to state the obvious.

The SILVER medal goes to @ Liam who has the great ability of praising other people’s comments about me without really having any ideas of his own

Bronze medal goes to Troll Hunter…. No explanation required.

        • realist says:

          Ha ha ha ha .

You really are just a dumb troll . Go and see what real Liverpool fans are saying on the Liverpool echo. And stop masturbating over your Joe Allen and john henry posters.

Haha ha ha . Trollhunter is so right.

DEJAVU!!! FSG are Wolves in Sheep’s clothing and are no better than Hicks & Gillett! Nothing has been done about

The Stadium upgrade, just a lot of hot air from FSG, when they gave their last excuse about it in September!

They hoodwinked Suarez into staying – putting him on a bigger, longer contract with a sell on clause to guarantee they get a much bigger transfer fee when Suarez DEFINITELY goes at the end of the season! I am resigned to the FACT that this FSG lot, are trying to milk us for all their worth based on our history, until our good name no longer means anything to anybody commercially!

This transfer window has been another farcical episode in FSG’s tenure! No doubt Brendan Rodgers will be left high and dry with our threadbare squad, and asked to put on a brave face to the Fans & Media for the rest of the season whilst we spiral to 7th place and Everton, Spurs & Man Utd fight it out for the last remaining CL spot! This is our reality folks get used to it… I hate to state this but it’d be a good thing for Everton to batter us tomorrow! It’d wake a lot of people up into the realization that we have no chance of progress under FSG!

  • Denis D says:

    B Rodgers should forget about A Turan(26) Of A Madrid for 27-33M

Instead B Rodgers needs to bring these three players to club in next three days for 37M

Yevhen Konoplyanka(24) Of Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk for 12-17M to play on RW or LW as RW / RWF or LW / LWF

Y MVila(23) Of Rubin Kazan for 8-12M to play as DM / CM
F Reges(26) Of Porto for 6-8M to play as CM or DM

These three players would definately shore up midfield and make team, squad alot stronger and we will make top 4 with these three players at club. With Allen, Agger, Enrique and Sakho soon back fit . Those 3 players would help club maintain top 4 finish all the way until May 2014
