Following on from the Red’s 3-nil hammering of arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, much has been made of Liverpool’s genuine title-challenge and whether it’s going to last the pace or run out of steam before the finish line.
Talking after the game, Liverpool youngster Jon Flanagan, who enjoyed an excellent game against United, said “We put a marker down (at Old Trafford). I think we are ready to push on and keep going.
“We all believe but our priority was top four at the start of the season. We are on track for that and anything else is a bonus.”
The win at Old Trafford left Liverpool just 4 points behind leaders Chelsea, with a game in hand and with Mourinho’s side having to come to Anfield before the season ends. Perhaps just as importantly for Liverpool the win only increases the player’s confidence in themselves and one another to face future challenges with that same level of control and gusto.
Echoing the words of his manager following the match, Flanagan went on to say, “We are just taking it a game at a time and keeping our feet on the ground.” and with just 9 games remaining (and no further distractions) it’s highly likely that Brendan Rodgers will be ensuring his players don’t lose sight of each game and the importance of putting Flanagan’s words into action.
