Reds Chase Costa Rican ‘Keeper

BARCELONA - LEVANTEAfter a super save by Reds goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet, on Sunday it’d be hard to believe that Liverpool would be in the market for a new ‘keeper, particularly not one labelled – by some – as the ‘best ‘keeper in La Liga’.

That said, Mignolet has not exactly been a resounding success in his first season at the club. Spectacular shot-stopping has been mixed in with some seriously concerning nervousness and Mignolet could probably do with some pressure from the bench to keep him on his toes.

The news late last week that Liverpool would not exactly be welcoming Pepe Reina back from his loan to Napoli with open arms meant that there was undoubtedly going to be a spare place in the squad for a new stopper, even more so considering that it’s unlikely that Brad Jones will be getting kept on.

However, at £10 million (or more than most first-choice goalies cost!) it’s unlikely that Liverpool would be chasing Levante’s Keylor Antonio Navas Gamboa to play as second fiddle to Simon Mignolet.

With 6 championships for his first club, Saprissa, the Costa Rican certainly has the pedigree in his homeland and with Levante (and, formerly, Albacete) he has sampled the delights of European football so there is no doubt he’s experienced at various levels.

But having just spent a fairly hefty sum on Mignolet last summer this one can probably be marked under ‘dubious’, unless either Navas’ form improves considerably or Mignolet’s deteriorates between now and the end of the season.

As we have seen so many times before, names mentioned in the ‘press’ generally don’t arrive. Names not quoted have and do arrive.

Stories like this are a waste of your talents dear author.
