Liverpool Pair the Best In the League?

PROP130212-065-Fulham_Liverpool-1133x8402In my opinion some fans are getting a little bit carried away with LFC’s stellar rise towards the league’s summit. I’ve read about Henderson being ‘the best midfielder in the Premier League’. Let Henderson win LFC leagues and cups and have seasons of top performances first!

I have equally heard some over zealous remarks about the brilliant Mr Rogers as the next/new Shankly, a statement which may prove in time to be accurate (we pray and hope) but right now, in my opinion, highly premature. While it’s nice to be optimistic, let Rodgers win us things first.

Tulips are emerging from the earth and birds are more readily visible in the prolonged daylight hours. Liverpool FC fans are emerging from their slumber, highly visible and happy. New Liverpool fans are sprouting from all the places man occupies on this earth. Many so called Man United fans often are people who can’t name any players as they don’t actually follow football but heard Man United ‘were’ good. Now they will support other teams and some of them will switch to Liverpool FC. Even if some of the joyful faces calling themselves LFC fans belong to fair weather friends, then that’s fine by me.

The extra hits on LFC websites, the purchases of LFC memorabilia and merchandise will only help to add coins to pay the £50mil debt and buy better players for the first team. I see scarf’s wrapped around drivers all over the country as I drive with my LFC colours close to my heart but not decorating my person. Keep spreading the good word, for every fan converted to Liverpool we may not be given virgins in heaven but at least there will be less Man United fans on earth which, in itself, is a step closer to heaven.

The recent game against Manchester United was a joy and the fact Reds fans all know they should have won by a bigger margin only adds to the joy. When Manchester United brought on Rio Ferdinand for Juan Mata at three nil down and with three minutes to go it spoke volumes about the level Liverpool were at and how much they’d outclassed the old enemy. Liverpool are not in the same league as Manchester United now as they, for now, sit in the league below. They are in a league that sees beating an average Olympiacos 3-0 at home as their best result of the season, as the season draws to a close.

They are in the league where they play LFC at home and see themselves as clearcut underdogs. While LFC are in a league where their manager says “I would never say that at Liverpool, even if we were bottom of the league. Anfield is Anfield.”. Mr Moyes defended himself from Mr Rodgers’s Shankly-esque reaction by saying “I just thought Liverpool were above us in the league and playing well and that any average person would have said the same.” Luckily for LFC the Liverpool manager is not average, he’s far from average.

During the match I saw Sir Alex Ferguson sitting motionless in the stands. His complexion suggested he was rather warm up there and his look was one of someone sitting on a grade four haemorrhoid. He didn’t move a muscle for minutes. I wondered if a taxidermist had done a poor job of mounting him! He hadn’t moved muscle, not a twitch in minutes. Then it occurred to me it wasn’t Sir Alex that had got stuffed it was his old team.

As the sun shines on Liverpool fans and they feel the warm glow of being God’s chosen ones or just being good and deserving of success we will remain humble. LFC fans have had a 20 year lesson on humility, a rare human virtue; we will not be smug…not just yet. Let’s be compassionate, and gracious in victory.

It’s great to be happy, its international happiness day as I write this but at the same time, logically it’s premature to feel sorry for Manchester United or calling Henderson the best midfielder in the league or Mr Rodgers the new Shankly….hopefully in time we can do all the above and more.

In the words of Aristotle (384 BCE – 322 BCE): “One swallow does not a summer make, nor one fine day; similarly one day or brief time of happiness does not make a person entirely happy.”

An armchair fan who loves the stadium experience but likes the bread and butter of replays, moronic pundits, a drink in a pub atmosphere. LFC is my religion.

Common sense is missing from football but the situation is always complicated so I endeavour to give opinion and encourage discussion and thought about LFC.

With the defesive colapse we have seen in to many games of lately, its very Nice to have players that scores at will. Unfortunally I do think we will be punished hard against the likes of City and Chelsea if we dont sew up the back. The latest display against Cardif was just horrible to watch. As an old striker I could tell on both first goals that we were going to concide 2-3 moves before the ball hit the net. By far to poor defending on to many occations of late, and I will be very pleasantly surprised if we do win the League this season. Everything is looking very Bright for the future thogh With CL all, but secured for NeXT year.
