What is the future of Liverpool’s Jose Enrique

LB - Jose EnriqueJose Enrique’s become somewhat of a forgotten man at Liverpool.

The Spanish left back has been injured for so long, I was uncertain whether or not he’d started the season at all. It was all going rather well for him despite his reputation; we all know how good he is going forward (remember THAT assist for Suarez a couple of years ago?) but he has been generally viewed as a bit of a liability defensively. He can definitely be inconsistent but he started the season well: in his 8 league appearances, we only conceded 4 goals. 1 goal conceded every 2 games.

Pretty much unrecognisable from our end of season defensive record, isn’t it? I’m not saying Enrique is necessarily key to this, but clearly he wasn’t the bumbling idiot many claim him to be.

I’ve always been a fan of Enrique; he’s definitely been inconsistent at the back but I always held the belief that he would improve, that his defensive capability would one day match his offensive skills. Then he got injured and had to go under the knife, missing the rest of the season and leaving it to Cissokho and Flanagan to cover him in his absence.

It is believed that the idea with ruling Enrique out of the rest of the season was to give him the opportunity to overcome his niggling injury problems once and for all with all these operations, and that he would come back injury-free and a better player for it.

Now, with the £17.9m signing of Alberto Moreno, the Spanish left back from Europa League winners Sevilla you have to wonder: what kind of future does Enrique have at the club?

You have to assume that Moreno will be first choice next season. He’s just as good going forward as Enrique, but seemingly more comfortable with his defensive duties. Jose will likely be rusty when he returns, having not kicked a ball since November, and it could be that he’ll slip back into his unreliable and inconsistent self again before he gets better.

Fortunately for him, Aly Cissokho has been sent back to Valencia and Flanagan has an equal shot at both full back positions next season, but the return of Andre Wisdom means the right flank will also see heavy competition.

Fortunately, there will be more opportunities to play this year with the club’s Champions League involvement. I expect Moreno will start in Europe, so there’s a good chance that Enrique might play in the league the following weekends if he can prove that he’s playing better than Flanagan in training.

That’s one thing you can guarantee under Rodgers; he picks players on merit. If Enrique can prove he deserves to start games, then he will. Hell, he could even start ahead of Moreno if Rodgers believes he’s playing better.

Next season will be the toughest that Jose Enrique has ever experienced at Liverpool. It’s up to him whether he can make the best of his situation, or suffer another year of disappointment.

I’d quite forgotten that we had a player of this name. Seems he has been almost permanently on the sidelines. Replacement needed!

is a gud thing that rodger is bringing and creating competitions among players. Lfc is about 2 become one of the unbeaten and most dangerous club again.

i dont know about jose, my guess is he’ll stay and be rotated/backup. he knows our defenders, he knows what BR wants him to do and wed get so little selling him that wed struggle to get a replacement if necessary. i personally think johno has more to worry about with flanno, kelly and though i expect a loan outwards, possibly wisdom/mclaughlin. last yr of contract if glen stays and doesnt renew deal, very poor form since…well i cant remember when he was last in good form to be honest, and younger players with potential who hopefully will be with the club for a while. id not give glen johnson many games next year if i was rodgers, look to the future and give oppourtunities to the future (hopefully)stars

If he is not on a very high wage (as am not sure how much he earns) then he should be kept as back up otherwise….

So long as the medical staff believe Enrique will get over his injuries he should rightly be retained. Glad to see LFC investing in that department though & hopefully we’ll get final confirmation of another purchase soon.

sell him. if anyone wants to pay 4m for him then sell. could do with recouping some money on the deadwood like him, assaidi and aspas

I would like to think Enrique will be a good back up for Moreno next season unless someone comes in with a decent offer for him. He is quick and strong but his main problem defensively is that he goes to sleep at set pieces, so my answer to this would be to have him as a free man and leave the marking to others so he can’t be at fault as he has been in the past.
