With Liverpool’s Pepe Reina having returned from his loan to Napoli, his future looks very uncertain. In fact, the only certainty is that he’ll probably not be a Red come the start of the new season.
Despite this, Reina’s stock is still high and he is held in high regard across Europe – something that Liverpool seem to be looking to take advantage of, if reports in Tuttosport in the last 24 hours.
Liverpool have held a long time interest in Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld, who moved to Atletico Madrid last season, and are looking to let Reina move to the Madrid side, provided it gives them the opportunity to sign the 25 year old who’s side knocked the USA out of the World Cup last night.
Liverpool are believed to be prepared to pay a portion of Reina’s wages in order to allow themselves the chance to sign the talented Belgian. Alderweireld is well-regarded in Europe and helped Atletico to break up the Barca/Real monopoly in La Liga last season, whilst suffering disappointment in the Champions League final.
The disappointment of missing out on the Premier League for Liverpool last season though, has season Brendan Rodger’s side look to quickly seek reinforcements and defence is a priority.
Would the signing of Alderweireld improve Liverpool’s defence next season?
