Allen has yet to really find his place at Anfield

Allen’s had a rough ride as a Liverpool player.

He had it all to do when he was signed for £14m, with many fans of the belief that he wasn’t a 14 million pound player. While he began to prove people wrong in the first couple of months his debut season, as he was clearly the only player who knew what he was doing while the rest of the squad struggled to adapt to Brendan Rodgers’ philosophy, his form quickly had a turn for the worst in the winter and he spiralled downwards.

Like Henderson a year earlier, Allen had to prove that he deserved a place in Liverpool’s starting XI. He didn’t quite achieve that objective, but he went a long way to redeeming himself. It all started with the 4-1 win against West Ham. It was his first start of the season, and I specifically remember looking at twitter and seeing fans react with surprise as they realised:

“Huh, Allen’s played pretty well tonight…”

He never made himself a first choice player, but Allen went through the rest of the season quietly rebuilding his reputation, and Rodgers often came to rely on him in the second half of the season to help control games and see out the win. Unfortunately, I don’t think the opposite was true.

For me, Joe Allen is not a player you send out to win games. If a game’s getting out of control and we’re struggling to keep our noses in front, then he’s a great player to bring on to slow things down, put his foot on the ball and dictate the tempo. However, I don’t think he showed last season that he’s a player you’d bring off the bench when you need a goal.

Like Henderson and Coutinho, Allen needs to work on his shooting. He occasionally got into some great positions last seasons but almost always lacked that finished

product. Cast your mind back to that 3-3 derby draw with Everton at Goodison Park and you’ll remember Allen putting a chance agonisingly wide when it seemed easier to score. That goes in, momentum turns to us and we arguably go on to win the game. There were other chances too when Allen would get the box to the edge of the area, only to blast it wide. If he can improve his shooting accuracy, it would be tough to deny him a first team spot.

However, in a three-man midfield that will clearly include Gerrard (now retired from internationals) and Henderson, Allen will now have to duke it out with new signings Emre Can and Adam Lallana for a starting spot. We all know Lallana’s talent and if the German youngster continues his excellent pre-season form, I can see Allen having problems breaking in again.

Allen has made tons of progress since the early days of his Liverpool career. But unless he improves to prove to Rodgers that he’s a better prospect than the new summer signings, he may struggle to make progress.

Did you mean “How will Joe Allen fare next season?

I ACTUALLY THINK ALLEN WILL HAVE A GOOD SEASON. THERE WILL BE NO PRESSURE ON HIM AS THAT WILL BE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE NEWER PLAYERS.

ASWELL AS THAT I THINK HE WILL HAVE MORE TO OFFER GOING FORWARD AS AS THE REPORT STATED, IF HE CAN IMPROVE ON HIS SHOOTING, WHICH IS SOMETHING I WOULD BE EXPECTING HIM TO DO THEN I THINK HE’LL GET AROUND 7 GOALS THIS SEASON.

LFC should sign FC Porto Andre Silva. He is a prolific goal scorer

I think you’d have to look for Brendan’s phone number and give him a call on that. We aint buying no one else other than lovren and a left back. We don’t field 22players my friend. Only 11.

      • TaintlessRed says:

Not strictly true. We’re in for a Left Back, but also for Manquillo a right back, and Brendan has made clear he wants a forward (especially with Remy deal failing & Borini ‘hopefully’ leaving)

Joe Allen will get his chance to show his talents this season. Even though Can, Gerrard, Henderson and Lucas(if he is not sold) will be around, Joe will be needed as LFC will be competing in 4 important challenges. With this season we’re expecting at least a trophy, every player will have to be at their 110%. Those who failed to live up to what BR’s standards will surely be packed out next transfer window regardless of how close they are with the boss.

Yeah I expect Allen to get a few goals this season as he looked like the pressure of getting his first goal was on his mind when he got the chance to shot. As he got his debute goal near the end of the season hopefully that pressure will be off now. He does get in good positions so I expect him to finish a higher percentage off next season.

Having watched all our pre-season games so far the player I’ve been most disspointed in is Joe. Unlike many others he’s had a great rest, he knows he has to fight for his place and improve but he has been poor. Still tidy in possession, still works really hard, but still gets a nose bleed when he gets into final third and gives it away, and eschews forward passes in favour of safety. Looked like he was learning last season, but pre-season he’s reverted to type.

It’s great Brendan is always positive, but with joe it’s perhaps time he realises he needs to make a step improvement if he is to get more minutes. A useful player when we want to keep the ball, and presses well, but Emre Can is far better option. Joe is still getting outmuscled but Emre is knocking the likes of Micah Richards over, marauding forwrad, making tackles interceptions, passing and moving and winning headers.
