Do Liverpool Need Alex Song?

Do the Reds still need to add to the already packed midfield?

So, amidst all the gossip stories and rumour of Liverpool signing this or that striker, occasionally you’ll get a name pop up that seems to makes sense and might actually have some truth to it. Over the past few days, that was Barcelona’s Alex Song.

The Cameroon international has been associated with a move to Liverpool from a number of sources in the past few days, with perhaps the only real sticking point being whether the club were willing to pay around £12 million for the midfielder or bring him in on loan for a season, allowing Barcelona the chance to recall him, if necessary.

Initial impressions may well be ‘why in God’s name do we need another central midfielder?’, and you wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that but between now and the end of this window it’s highly likely that Lucas Leiva will be on the move, more than likely to work under Rafa Benitez at his current club.

The former Gunner took some time to find his feet at Arsenal and was often overlooked by the home – and away – fans because of his ungainly style. Over the past 3-4 years though (particularly since his move to Barcelona) Song has developed into a top-class defensive midfielder.

Song appears unwanted by the current Barcelona coach and a monetary move may well be welcome, as opposed to a loan move. However, with FIFA yesterday upholding Barcelona’s 2 window transfer ban, the club may well prefer to either loan the player or not let him move on until next summer.

Do you feel that Song would be an upgrade on Lucas? Or, even if Lucas leaves, is that an area where no more money needs to be spent during this window?

Sorry but I feel that Lucas’ standard had been dropping. He is always conceding silly freekicks in dangerous situations. Certainly Liverpool need another defensive midfielder as Lucas is no longer that dependable anymore. I only hope Emre will settle down fast for Liverpool.
