Liverpool will have to see an alternate side to Balotelli in the coming weeks

Watching Liverpool play in the past couple of weeks reminds me of the same team three years back when they were struggling to win games and getting into top four in the league table. Yes, Liverpool are missing Luis Suarez and sadly, Daniel Sturridge too. But not just that, I think Liverpool are missing the overall dynamism that they showed last year.

They lack the punch.

Losing to Real Madrid by three goals to nil is acceptable given the kind of form both teams are in but scoring no goals against Hull City is inexcusable. Should we be happy about maintaining a clean sheet? Well, that appears like an achievement nowadays for Rodgers’ men. It is pretty clear now that Liverpool are out of the title race and race to top four in itself seems like a mountain to climb for the Reds.

I don’t doubt that they will show intensity in every game week in and week out but the overall technique seems flawed. Who is to be blamed? It is harsh to point out any  one single person and it is a collective failure. Both manager and the players should take responsibility for the poor run of form. I pray they get back to what they do best; win games.

Let’s shift our topic to the man who enjoys spotlight and can’t be kept out of the radar. Yes. You guessed it right. It’s super Mario! Balotelli has been all over the news headlines for his infamous shirt swapping scene at halftime against Real Madrid. He doesn’t seem to be doing anything right nowadays, does he? He is in a poor goal scoring form (last night aside, of course!), never fitted into the team and attracts criticisms easily.

He doesn’t fit into the Liverpool ideology. He breaks the flow of the game and is often caught out of position. He is not the kind of striker Liverpool wants. It’s clear Borini would fit better and one can only wonder why Rodgers is tentative about playing Borini as the striker. He has the pace and power and proved lethal in the pre-season matches.

As always, I’d like to point out some bright spots in the side despite dismal performances – Philippe Coutinho. How important is he to this side? He initiated the momentum shift in Liverpool’s favor both matches he came on as substitute against QPR and Hull, as well as being outstanding against Swansea.

He is our best midfield talent who can go on and attack the opponents with technical brilliance and ability to partner well with Liverpool’s best, Raheem Sterling. It is mind blowing to watch a nineteen year old carry all of the hopes of the team single-handedly. He performs every game. What more could you ask for? Steven Gerrard is trying to come to his team’s rescue but the team, in whole, must respond to achieve what he wants.

Liverpool have got tough fixtures ahead including one against the leaders. I hope they find a right formula to kick start the season because it is going to be tough moving forward as Arsenal and Manchester United are playing with a fighting spirit every game to find a place in the top four.
