The Greek hard man has been linked with Liverpool a great many times in the past

With the Reds having had a rough time defensively earlier in the season, and with one or two defenders potentially being moved on in the summer, it seems that the club are scouting a number of targets. Today the main rumour doing the rounds is that of Schalke’s Kyrgiakos Papadopoulos.

The Metro (obviously, not the most reliable source), amongst others, are claiming that Liverpool are interested in taking the player once his loan to Bayer Leverkusen ends at the end of the current season.

The Greek player is still just 23 years of age and, despite an injury-hit career so far, has still managed to play over 130 games. He has impressed on loan at Leverkusen recently and looks to be building on the reputation of his early career.

You may recall that the Reds have tracked the player before and may have been very close to signing the 23 year old but for a series of recurring injuries a year or two ago.

The young Greek international has engineered a reputation as something of a tough guy, and has a no nonsense style that wins fans over easily, something Brendan Rodgers may feel the team could do with, with only Martin Skrtel fitting that role.

But perhaps Papadopoulos’ biggest strength would be in his ability to play in either central defense or defensive midfield; two areas where the team has lacked cover at times this season.
