Liverpool have been linked with several top strikers since January

As Liverpool prepare to face Swansea City tonight in the Premier League, this weekend saw the top four ‘rat race’ take yet another turn.

Tottenham and Southampton are now becoming cut adrift from Manchester United and Arsenal after both lost on Sunday, while Manchester City are in the race for the Champions League positions rather than the title after defeat at Burnley.

Liverpool can join the trio above them in a firm four way fight for three places if they can win at a ground that has been eluding a Red victory since the Swans were promoted to the Premier League.

For that, they will need their frontmen back on song, but it is testament to manager Brendan Rodgers, Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling that many still believe Daniel Sturridge is best left on the bench.

This is because the new formation has seen Lallana and especially Coutinho flourish behind Sterling, who provides them space to work with by stretching the defenders with his pace. Whilst Sturridge hardly lacks speed and movement himself, he seems to struggle a little upfront on his own, without a partner or two attacking players directly beside him, rather than behind.

Furthermore, he is still recovering his sharpness and match fitness from the long injury lay-off, which in itself is an argument to play him, otherwise how can he regain sharpness?

However, while the team is winning and performing, Rodgers could very well leave Sturridge out, alongside captain Steven Gerrard, which would have been unthinkable at the start of the season.

Nevertheless, Rodgers will accommodate Sturridge eventually, if it means another formation change or an adaption to the Englishman’s game, but the situation behind Sturridge and Sterling is grim.

Mario Balotelli has not performed since moving from AC Milan and is arguably the most unreliable player in the world, while Rickie Lambert does not suit the system and Fabio Borini lacks quality. Even Sterling is traditionally not a striker, preferring to play in the positions currently accommodated by Lallana and Coutinho.

Therefore, despite Divock Origi arriving this summer from a season-long loan at Lille (who has hardly set the world alight in France), another striker is needed, and it will probably be a young talent with plenty of potential who can fit into the Rodgers formula.

Hence here are four possible targets for the Reds to consider.
