It may not have been the result that Liverpool needed, and the performance was often patchy, but Liverpool came away from the trip to Stamford Bridge with a respectable point.
Prior to the weekend, all eyes were on the Reds or Man Utd to see whether either team would drop points. And while Utd came away with a very fortunate three points, Brendan Rodgers’ side had to be content with a draw. A result that all but ends Liverpool’s hopes of attaining Champions League football for a second season.
But, while the result may have not been exactly what Liverpool needed, Steven Gerrard did have one last laugh at the expense of Chelsea’s fans who, once again, taunted him for ‘that’ slip relentlessly throughout.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Gerrard said: “I’m not going to get drawn into wishing the Chelsea fans well, it was nice of them to turn up for once today.
“I was more happy with the ovation from the Liverpool fans. I think the Chelsea fans have shown respect for a couple of seconds, but they’ve slaughtered me all game.
“If you get a standing ovation at a stadium it is always nice, but what is always important is the support from the Liverpool fans, and they’ve been with me since day one.”
Much of the ire from the Chelsea fans no doubt stems from the club’s attempts to sign Gerrard ten years ago, something that, whilst coming very close to actually happening on a couple of occasions, eventually fell through, meaning the Liverpool captain stands as perhaps the highest profile player to ever turn down Abramovich’s millions.
Gerrard’s comments paired well with his equalizer in the last few moments of the first half, and he can leave Anfield over the summer knowing that he had the final word with Chelsea’s classless fans.
