Coates has had a bid accepted and now seems on his way to Sunderland

It’s been a long time coming, considering his good run at Sunderland, but Liverpool have finally agreed the sale of Uruguayan centre back, Sebastian Coates, to Sunderland for £4 million.

The 24 year old struggled through injuries whilst on loan to the North east side last season, but came good at the right time, impressing in a run of form toward the end of the season, earning himself a move to the club.

It was an unfortunate move, in the end, for Coates at Anfield, after impressing hugely during Uruguay’s successful Copa America campaign. He was outstanding, earning praise from all quarters and, literally, earning a big move to LFC.

But it just wasn’t to be, after injuries, poor form and new acquisitions conspired to see Coates loaned out, first to his former club Nacional, then to Sunderland last season.

The big centre back managed just 24 games over 4 seasons at Anfield (albeit, with 18 month spent out on loan) and will no doubt go down as another promising youngster that failed to make the grade at the club.

We can only wish Seba well on his move to Sunderland, and just hope he doesn’t make us regret selling him in the seasons to come!

The irony is if Coates had been at Southampton for the last two years we’d be bidding 20m for him.
