The popular former Rafa assistant may be on his way in to replace Pascoe

According to reports late last night, Liverpool are set to reappoint former Rafa Benitez assistant, Pako Ayesteran, as Colin Pascoe’s replacement. Rodgers’ number 2 followed Mike Marsh out of the door during the week, in a move which seems to indicate that somebody – somewhere – is pointing to the coaching staff as a big part of the problem last season.

Rodgers had his end-of-season review in the week with Werner and Gordon and it appeared that it was pretty much a case of ‘same again, lads’ for the coming season, but the release of two of Rodgers’ most trusted coaches has left a big hole in the Ulsterman’s team.

The Daily Mirror and Sunday People have since reported that the club is set to appoint Pako to the role of assistant to Rodgers, something that would be greeted with knowing nods from Liverpool fans that appreciated the work the Spaniard put in alongside Benitez. The publications also report that Alex Inglethorpe is also likely to be promoted to replace Mike Marsh.

With regards Pako, it seems a strange decision that the current Maccabi Tel Aviv manager would be prepared to return to England to act as Rodgers’ number 2, considering he has just made history at the club by winning a domestic treble. And given that he was known to have regularly butted heads with Rafa, it’ll be interesting to see how Rodgers reacts to having a man working closely with him that is likely to speak his mind, rather just go along with his boss, like Pascoe often seemed to do.

If it happens, would you welcome Pako’s return to Anfield? Let us know your thoughts below.

So, fsg has seen that a man who completed his coaching badges 3 years ago isn’t fit to be an assistant? Then marsh? They should get rid of the goalkeeping coach as well. Another man who was never a goalkeeper.

It also says a lot about Brendan. Just in case you haven’t noticed. The review was more like a disciplinary! I do hope he learns now. As we don’t have much choice as fans. Should either walk or be shown the door . Neither is happening, let’s hope never to hear him on talk sport etc and spend his time learning the trade instead of talking grand dreams of managing in Spain etc
