Benteke looks all but destined for Liverpool this year

When Liverpool show interest in a player, it generally doesn’t matter who they are, you can always bank of one thing: before too long Tottenham will get involved and hang about like a bad smell.

Thus it ever was, thus it always will be and the pursuit of Christian Benteke has proven no different (much like the transfer of Ings) with the London club quickly following Liverpool’s interest.

However, Benteke has now made it clear that if he is to leave his club this summer, he’s only interested in a move to Anfield. At least that’s according to the press over the past 24 hours.

Benteke has long been linked with a move to Liverpool but this summer is likely to be the transfer window that that actually happens, with the big Belgian earmarked as the ideal striker to complement the Reds’ current squad and style of play, despite what many fans and pundits seem to believe.

One important thing to note however, is that club legend Robbie Fowler (a man who knows a thing or two about scoring goals in a Liverpool shirt) believes Benteke would be the ideal player for Liverpool in an area that has been a big problem since Luis Suarez left last year.

Fowler told the Liverpool ECHO: “The striker issue is a big thing.

“We didn’t have anyone who scored 10 Premier League goals last year and I can’t remember the last time that happened at Liverpool.

“It’s important we get a proven goalscorer and of the names being bandied about I’d go for Benteke. I think he’s excellent.

“I know there are other top strikers out there and probably more prolific scorers. But in terms of all-round play – strength, speed, physicality, finishing – I think Benteke could be the main man for Liverpool.”

Do you agree with Robbie’s opinion of the striker? Let us know your thoughts below.
