According to reports in the press over the past 24 hours, Liverpool will make an approach to Newcastle for the club’s France international Moussa Sissoko.
The 25 year old has been one of only a handful of positives for Newcastle in recent seasons and a move to a more successful, illustrious club is all but inevitable, with the former Toulouse star impressing in his three seasons in the Premier League.
Sissoko had his best season to date last year, scoring five times from the Newcastle midfield and the Frenchman’s strong, aggressive, combative style would be an ideal addition to a Reds midfield that lacked those key attributes unless Lucas Leiva was playing last season.
French newspaper, L’Equipe, are now reporting (via the Express) that Liverpool are ‘closing in’ on a move for the midfielder, having earmarked him as the club’s top midfield target, with (unsurprisingly) Arsenal and Manchester United also believed to be interested.
Having shown interest in a host of other midfielders – without success – since the season ended, Liverpool would be sticking with the club’s approach this summer of (primarily) bringing in players with Premier League experience.
If the Sissoko rumours prove true, then there’s no doubting that the Newcastle player would add some real steal and hardness to the Liverpool side that’s been missing at times since Rodgers took over but is he of sufficient quality to improve on the current crop of Reds midfielders?
