Gomez could have big future at Anfield

While the press are busying themselves bigging up another West Ham wonder-boy, Liverpool’s new future star – Joe Gomez – was going about his business quietly and efficiently at Stoke on Sunday, in a no-nonsense, impressive display that belied his years.

He may not have kept Mesut Ozil out of a game at the Emirates but, in some ways, keeping a wily old customer like Jon Walters mostly quiet at a match at Stoke is as impressive an achievement.

And Liverpool legend John Aldridge seems to think so, as he said in his Echo article on Tuesday that he believes Gomez has a big future at the club.

He said: “I’m wary of speaking too much, too soon about a young footballer, but I think Liverpool may have ‘found one’ in Joe Gomez.

“He earned his chance at Stoke with his performances in Australia and the Far East, and I’ll tell you something, he’s done himself no harm with the way he played on his Premier League debut either.

“He’s 18 years of age, but you wouldn’t know it to watch him. He’s so comfortable, composed, quality.

“That was a proper test for a young defender; up against a wily player like Jon Walters, in front of a hostile crowd who will always try and put you off your game.

“That was a superb performance from the young man. He’s got a big future, Gomez.

“He can play anywhere across the backline, so he will be a more than useful player for Brendan Rodgers.

“He’ll get plenty of chances this season, no question about it. He certainly took the first one that came his way, on Sunday.”

There’s no doubting that Brendan Rodgers is in agreement with Also either, considering the arrival of Gomez has seen Andre Wisdom again allowed to leave on loan, whilst Alberto Moreno was benched in favour of the 18 year old.

It’s unlikely that the youngster will feature in every game this season but, for the time being, he seems to have at least played so well that the club don’t consider a back up left back a priority as was previously believed.
