Due to be serialised in the Daily Mail all week, it was inevitable that the juiciest, most controversial statements and quotes were going to be garnered from Gerrard’s autobiography but it was quite surprising to see the week kick off with such criticisms of former Reds manager Rafa Benitez.
As we said yesterday, it was always fairly clear that the pair didn’t see eye to eye on most things but it was perhaps disappointing to see the paper begin with the quotes about Rafa – a figure that still remains hugely popular amongst Liverpool fans.
But after having had a day or two to take in Gerrard’s words, Rafa has – thankfully – opted to keep quiet, only stating that he believes Gerrard is wrong, presumably with regards his former player’s comments on their relationship and Xabi Alonso.
Speaking to Spanish TV about Gerrard’s words, Rafa said: “I have read the quotes and I believe he is wrong.
“Out of the respect that I have for Stevie and for the value and appreciation I have for him, and for Liverpool and the supporters, I think it’s best to just let it pass.
“He has brought out a book and now I’m the Real Madrid manager, that sells.”
Unlike another man that came in for criticism from Gerrard this week, El Hadji Diouf, it’s good to see Real Madrid manager refusing to get involved and hopefully both can move on from a potentially unpleasant situation.
Huge admiration for Gerrard as a player but the opposite as a man.
