Liverpool have confirmed Jurgen Klopp as the club’s new manager this evening

It’s been three years in the making but today it has been officially announced: Jurgen Klopp is the new Liverpool FC manager.

Klopp was unveiled as the new Reds manager with Ian Ayre just moments ago, after a long week of speculation that an announcement was due before the weekend.

The German manager, as you will all know by now (unless you’ve been under a rock), is the former manager of Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund, spending seven years at both clubs. He led Mainz 05 back to the Bundesliga and a place in the (then) Uefa Cup before moving to Dortmund in 2008.

It was at Signal Iduna Park that Klopp really made his name though, taking a side that had struggled to return to its former prominence back to the pinnacle of German football. Following a 6th and then 5th place finish in his first and second seasons, Klopp’s side finally hit their stride in his third season, winning the Bundesliga for two successive seasons and breaking up the monopoly previously held by Bayern Munich.

After losing a number of the club’s top players to Bayern over the next few years, and narrowly missing out on the Champions League trophy, Klopp stepped down at the end of the 2014-15 seasons after struggling to maintain the success of prior years after, once again, losing players to rivals and early season injuries.

The 48 year old managed to guide Dortmund to a respectable 7th placed finish and heads to Anfield today as one of the most well-respected and sought after young managers in Europe.

Klopp has signed a three year deal with the club and will get straight to work at Melwood. With a large number of the squad being away on international duty, the German will have time to get familiar with the club and training complex ahead of his first game in charge away at Tottenham on 17th October.

Welcome to Anfield, Jurgen!
