The young striker worked hard but wasn’t able to get on the scoresheet

Although young Belgian striker Divock Origi has officially been an LFC player for almost 18 months, the 20-year old’s full Premier League debut only came on Saturday morning at Spurs.

After a goalless draw at Spurs, and a somewhat laboured, nervy display from the forward there were concerns over where Liverpool’s goals might actually come from in the absence of more experienced strikers in Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings and Christian Benteke. Particularly with Sturridge a regular injury concern, Ings likely to miss the whole season and Benteke’s return a few games away, at least.

But the youngster believes that it’s only a matter of time before the goals start flowing. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match, Origi said: “I tried to work hard for the team.

“It’s a new system and I was very excited, just a bit unlucky with the finishing but I’m sure it’ll come.

“Everybody has encouraging words for me so I just have to continue like this and it will be okay.

“I feel for sorry for the boys that are out but I will just try to support the team and do my best.

“Everybody says that I have the qualities, I just have to work hard and the goals will come.”

The striker had a couple of decent chances on Saturday, heading against the bar and a late chance struck straight at Lloris but wasn’t able to find a way through. But with Klopp having admitted to missing out on Origi to LFC last summer, it’s highly likely that the former Lille player will see plenty more game time under the German.

And considering his track record for bringing through young talent, Origi could well go on to flourish under the German, who he admits has had his new players working hard in training.

Origi continued: “He told us just to play with passion and no fear.

“He believes in everybody – the young players, the old players, we’re all here because we have quality.

“We just have to work hard and trust him, and we all trust him so I think we can have a good season.

“When you look at the coach, he sends out a very strong feeling, a very powerful feeling. You can see it through the team.

“We had a lot of energy, we pressed, we played with a lot of joy. We are a very strong together as a club with the fans also, it’s a very nice thing.”
