The Liverpool striker has again come in for criticism after his latest injury

Contrary to the piece published this morning by Live4liverpool.com regarding how Liverpool should deal with the future of Daniel Sturridge after his latest injury setback, for Liverpool player and Istanbul ’05 legend, Didi Hamann, believes the club can’t afford to keep him.

According to Didi, Sturridge is a ‘luxury Liverpool can’t afford’. A sentiment that many Liverpool fans will no doubt agree with at this stage in the striker’s Reds career.

Sturridge has now passed the stage where he has played even 50% of Liverpool’s games since the start of last season. Something which, for many, is the final straw and Hamann told talkSport today that Liverpool simply aren’t at a level where they can afford to keep such an injury prone player.

The German told Colin Murray on his talk show: “You can’t rely on him.

“The club needs to make a decision now about whether you can have a player, who is one of your top earners, who only plays half the games at best.

“He is a luxury Liverpool cannot afford. They’ve got to make a call, because he’s not going to go from playing 50 per cent of games a year to 90-100 per cent. It isn’t going to happen.

“Are they good enough and wealthy enough as a club? I don’t think Liverpool, in the current state they are in, can afford him.

“I don’t need to know how often he’s been injured. He has history.”He was the same when we were at City.”

So Didi clearly believes that Liverpool need to make ‘a call’. Presumably he means to get rid but that itself would bring a whole lot of financial implications for the club, not to mention the issue if Sturridge ends up finding fitness – and some great form – at another club.

It’s a difficult situation the club, and the player himself, find themselves in but it’s one that won’t be resolved anytime soon.
