After another Liverpool goalkeeping horror show at the weekend, ter Stegen has been linked again

There seems to be some disagreement amongst fans and press alike at present, regarding which area Liverpool need to strengthen most once the January transfer window opens.

To some, the constant weakness over the years has been the Reds defence, with Skrtel, Lovren, Sakho and Toure regularly failing to inspire confidence.

Meanwhile, others will argue that a goalkeeper should be the priority, that lack of a top class, reliable number one has hamstrung the back line for far too long.

In many ways, both are spot on but building from the back is always key, and the goalkeeper is as far back as you can go, not to mention a position of contention since Pepe Reina left. Simon Mignolet and Adam Bogdan have shown that neither can be relied upon and if a top quality replacement is available then they should be acquired as soon as possible.

Step forward Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the Barca keeper with a bright future that is currently struggling to make any sort of impact at the club.

The German international joined Barcelona in 2014 but has since made just 32 appearances and is not having a good time at present, having been omitted from all of Barca’s matches at the World Club Cup.

He has also made just four League appearances since joining, playing the majority of his games in cup competitions and Spanish publication Marca are claiming that the 23 year old wants regular first team football and will look to move on in January.

That could be enough to convince Liverpool that they have the chance of snapping up a potentially world class keeper, for relatively cheap and the fact that the top German manager in Europe is at Anfield will certainly not harm the Reds’ chances.

Of course, Liverpool wouldn’t be alone in making any move but with the top five or six in the Premier League having top keepers themselves, any competition is likely to come from abroad.

Should the Reds make ter Stegen (or a top keeper, at least) their top priority in January? Let us know your thoughts below.

This MUST be our first order of business if we are serious in challenging for honours. If we are contented to be a mid level team with the occasional fight for relegation by all means keep this 2 bungling fools signed by that conman. I am sure our great gaffer would know what to do. He could start by not offering our first choice part time keeper a new contract.

Top goalkeeper is the main priority as the current ones are pathetic and too error prone. I wouldn’t mind if Mignolet gets demoted to our second choice if we can only get one top goalkeeper in. The goalkeeping coach also needs to be scrutinized, as he has had at least two season to work with Mignolet in trying to cut his silly mistakes and poor judgement and decision making. A top goalkeeper who commands his goal area is trusted by the defenders in front of him and they can concentrate on their game and not worry about the possibility of the keeper fumbling and conceding silly goals. We had the second best defence in the premiership in 2011 under Kenny Dalglish as we had Pepe Reina in goal who was very vocal, communicated with his defenders, and led from the back. His leadership along with Carragher at the back made the defence solid. Our problem in that season was we weren’t scoring goals and were breaking records of hitting the goal posts the most in a single season

A close second priority is a top and very mobile striker like Pierre Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette. Benteke is another bad buy, as he doesn’t fit our type of play just like Mario Balotelli and Andy Carroll before him. With Sturridge frequently out injured, we need a top striker to lead the line just like Louis Suarez did two seasons ago when we almost won the title.Sturridge can then come in, in a supporting role when he is fit to play and hopefully Ings will also be available and back to form after his current injury. Origi is a work in progress and could be a better and more consistent striker than Benteke if Klopp continues grooming him
