Matip could sign a pre agreement in January if he holds off on signing his new contract

Matip could join Liverpool in the summer transfer window

With injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren, as well as long-term absentee Joe Gomez, Liverpool are currently running low on defensive options.

And there are some that would even argue that, when all are fit, there is still need for defensive reinforcements this January and it appears that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp agrees.

According to reports today, via Goal.com, the club are keen to take Schalke centre back Joel Matip in the summer and would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January with the player himself who has continued to stall on a new contract at the club.

The 24 year old Cameroonian has been at the club his entire career, rising through the reserves before making his first team debut in 2009 and has gone on to play 236 games for the club.

Matip is a highly rated young centre back, who can also fill in in midfield, something which will no doubt appeal to Klopp and the club, with the player able to cover two positions.

However, at this time, Schalke appear hell-bent on keeping the player and will resist all attempts to sign him in January, meaning Liverpool may well be forced to go down the pre-contract agreement route, should the player hold continue to stall on the new contract offer.

Would the 24 year old be a good addition to Liverpool’s squad, and who would be partner at the back? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
