Despite having already signed Steven Caulker on loan from QPR, and Caulker going straight into action from the bench against Arsenal last night, reports yesterday claimed that Liverpool are still in the running for Martin Caceres.
According to Tuttosport (via the Telegraph), Juventus will not allow the 28 year old to move to a fellow Serie A side, which now apparently puts Liverpool in pole position for the defender.
Liverpool had previously shown an interest, but the Uruguayan was believed to prefer to stay in Italy. However, Juve refuse to let the player move to a rival and this, according to the Italian publication, leaves Liverpool in a strong position.
Apparently, Caceres is surplus to requirements, having made just 4 appearances this season but Juventus obviously still think highly enough of him if they’re reluctant to let him move to a title rival.
Caceres has played for Juventus just 84 times across 4 1/2 seasons at the club, but has a vast amount of experience for his 28 years, with 4 Serie A titles, a La Liga, a Champions League and a number of cups. He may not necessarily have played a huge part in all of those, but simply having that aura of success can be a huge bonus for any player, certainly coming to Anfield.
According to transfermarkt.com, the defender is valued at around £4.9 million but expect Juve to be looking for a bit more than that.
Do the club need to add more January recruitments at the back, or should Liverpool be looking elsewhere now they’ve acquired Caulker on loan? Let us know your thoughts below.
FSG will not pay much, if anything for a player who will be 29 in 3 months time. so this is just yet more paper talk. Only a free will bring this deal to fruition.
