The Liverpool number one has come in for more criticism after another error in the final yesterday

Tearing down members of the cup final squad straight after the game is something many fans don’t like to see. If you lose it, anger is high and tensions rise and many things can be said that aren’t really meant at that time.

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher has never been one to tow the line though and he came out firing both barrels at the two players he believes let Jurgen and his players down yesterday.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, he said: “The left-back has to come out of the team.

“This is not a one-off today in terms of the goal.

“[Jon] Flanagan has come back fit and has to go into the team in midweek, he [Klopp] has to change the left-back.

“Flanagan played left-back when they nearly won the league. He can’t be worse than him [Moreno].

“The goalkeeper has made some outstanding saves today, but just because you make some outstanding saves doesn’t mean you should be allowed to concede a goal like that. And that is not just today.

“Going forward for Liverpool, those are two areas Jurgen Klopp has to change in the summer.

“The goalkeeper may have signed a five-year deal, and he has made some good saves today, but things have to change.”

After the first 45 minutes, Liverpool again looked the stronger of the two in the second half but a lapse from Moreno and a typically poor attempt to save a straightforward shot from Mignolet gifted Man City a lead they hardly warranted.

Both player’s have been culpable a number of times this season but most fans see Mignolet as the biggest issue, and his new long-term contract is looking increasingly like a big mistake.

Carragher continued: “It starts with the left-back Moreno. He splits initially from a goal kick, but now he knows he isn’t going to receive the ball he has to get back.

“Sergio Aguero is in the right position to pick up the ball because his opposite full-back has gone in to go for a header. And then he [Moreno] doesn’t see the run.

“But that [Mignolet’s mistake] is shocking. You can’t score from there.”

With Liverpool pushing on in the second half, an equalizer began to look like it wasn’t going to come but the pressure the Reds put Man City under eventually paid off as Coutinho pulled a goal back.

But Mignolet continued his uninspiring form into the shootout, getting close to three of City’s penalties but never looking like saving any. It just wasn’t to be for Klopp’s men in the end but the final will have hopefully brought some realisations home about certain players ahead of the summer.

Were Mignolet and Moreno the culprits for the Reds yesterday or were we just unlucky? Let us know your reaction in the comments.
