The 18 year old midfielder could be in for a few huge offers in the summer

Seeing Liverpool linked with 18 year old midfielders is par for the course these days, and is something most Reds fans have come to expect.

However, considering reports from O Jogo (via the Daily Express) claim that Liverpool are looking to go head-to-head with Manchester United for a youngster who apparently has a buyout clause worth £62 million but Benfica would accept as little as £47 million.

Even at the measly sum of £47 million though, it’s hard to see Liverpool wanting to match that valuation for a player that hasn’t even managed 20 games for the first team, no matter how impressive he’s been.

The player in question is Renato Sanches, a young Portuguese star that has been highly impressive since breaking into Benfica’s first team late last year.

That said, it is noted that Liverpool did have scouts at Benfica’s most recent game to watch the youngster, and we’re not alone, by all accounts. Apparently, Manchester United have scouted the midfielder already a few times this season, whilst Chelsea and a host of top European sides have also had people watching the midfielder.

As has been stated elsewhere, quite why Liverpool would spend a fortune on an 18 year old, when it’s already clear there is plenty of talent throughout the club’s own youth system, is open to question.

Not only that, but with another highly rated young midfielder (Marko Grujic) having just signed, and clear areas where’s investment is needed din the first team, it would appear highly unlikely that we’d see the Reds splashing out what would be a hefty chunk of any ‘warchest’ Jurgen Klopp will be given in the summer on one 18 year old with barely any experience.
