The heroes of the night, Sakho and Lovren

What a game, what a night. We’ve longed for nights like these since the days of Rafa Benitez, we’ve missed nights like these for far too long.

Trust Jurgen to bring them crashing back, and how! The night had begun in a fantastic way, with fans on both sides joining for a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, and all seemed set for a night for players to make themselves a place in folklore.

But after just 10 minutes, it was – to many – as good as over. Liverpool had found themselves 2 goals down with less than 10 minutes gone and the crowd had, pretty much, been silenced.

However, Liverpool’s fans hadn’t come to have their party dashed, and the noise gradually ramped back, with the players slowly responding and going close several times in the remainder of the half.

An early Origi goal gave fans hope, before eternal Liverpool ‘target’, Marco Reus, appeared to have definitely ended the tie. Again, not to be, and the fans didn’t need to inspire the players this time, as they had the bit between their teeth, pulling the second goal back in less than 10 minutes before following up shortly after with a another.

As the clocked ticked down, it appeared to be no more than a heroic, but ultimately wasted fightback before Dejan Lovren nodded home James Milner’s 91st minute cross and sent Anfield into raptures.

In all truth, there were several wretched defensive performances last night, and a number of players took far too long to get going but boy, once they did, Dortmund just couldn’t handle it. Check out our slightly biased ratings.
