The Belgian was largely untested but offered nothing for the Villarreal goal

GK/Defence

Simon Mignolet – Had practically nothing to do on the night but got down well to push aside the home side’s best chance before the goal. Speaking of which, he was at his flappy best for the goal. Rating – 5

Nathaniel Clyne – Very solid defensively, and actually spent more time in Villarreal’s half than his own. At least it seemed that way. His crossing was utter pants though, and he really needs to work on that. Rating – 7

Dejan Lovren – The partnership with Toure was excellent again, barring the late goal. It was an unfortunate end to a solid defensive performance. Rating – 7

Kolo Toure – Mis-timed his header in the move that led to the goal but would be harsh to fault him too much. Was outstanding defensively. Rating – 8 Man of the Match

Alberto Moreno – Like Clyne, Moreno gave a great deal of support to the attack but was not able to find a way through down the left. He engineered the Reds’ best chance late on and was unlucky not to grab that vital away goal. However, must taken some blame for the home side’s goal. Rating – 7
