Liverpool and Everton were both willing to offer €30m or £25.5m for Zenit St Petersburg central midfielder Axel Witsel, according to Sport in Spain, but the Belgian international has agreed to join Juventus instead.

Despite the Merseyside rivals offering more money, the 27 year old is believed to have signed a “preliminary agreement” with the Old Lady, the Spanish newspaper is reporting, and the Serie A side are now waiting for Paul Pogba’s move to Manchester United to be finalised before sealing the deal for Witsel as his replacement at the club.

Juventus, it is believed, were only willing to offer €20m initially, €10m less than either Liverpool or Everton but it looks like a deal worth €23million will now go through after Pogba’s move is set in stone. The French playmaker is believed to be heading for a medical in Manchester today before finally making the move to Old Trafford official in the coming days.
