Former Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has been speaking about the reasons behind why he left Anfield this summer. Despite having an excellent Euro 2016 campaign with Wales, the 26 year old was sold to Stoke City for £13million in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp consistently praised Allen’s abilities but the lack of starts that the Welshman got under the German made it obvious to the midfielder that it was time to move on. He told the Liverpool Echo:

“I think it had come to the point where I needed to move on. Personally, it was pretty obvious. Any player will tell you regular football makes tonnes of difference to the way you perform and the way you feel out on the football pitch. It comes to a certain stage in your career where if it’s not happening then you have to go and seek it out.”

Allen had only one year left on his contract with the Reds before his Stoke move, and considering the Merseyside club paid £15million for the the player back in 2012, it shows that the Welsh international was highly rated with Liverpool only losing £2million on a player who would have been available for free to clubs within six months. At 26 years of age, he is entering the prime of his career and will be relishing starting more matches in the Premier League this season.
