Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum believes the Reds squad is benefiting this season from fewer games and more hours on the training pitch.

The Dutchman has spoken to a number of players who were involved in the fixture pile up last year when the Reds were playing in four competitions at one point, and the 25 year old says they struggled to cope. He told Liverpoolfc.com:

“If you play that many games with the same players, at the end of the year you’re going to be tired. I think that was the biggest problem they had last season.”

“When I speak with players who played last season, they all say the same – that it was a lot of games, they didn’t train a lot and it was difficult because the squad was not that big and they had injuries.”

The Reds have no European competition this season and have had a full week’s preparation for the match against Swansea tomorrow unlike some of Liverpool’s top of the table rivals including Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City who all had to play mid week European fixtures.

The last time the Reds had so many gaps between matches was the 2013/14 season when they went close to winning the Premier League title but it is too early to say how this season will play out. The match against the Swans tomorrow will give us a better indication of what level Liverpool are playing at this campaign.
