Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes that goalkeeper Simon Mignolet should return in goal against Manchester United after the international break.

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Aldo believes new number one Loris Karius’s weakness on crosses have already caused the Reds two concede goals, and that is kicking isn’t particularly strong either:

“He’s conceded from two corners on the bounce and some of his distribution, which we’ve been led to believe is a strong point, has not exactly been fantastic.”

Before the match against Hull City when the 23 year old was given his Premier League debut, manager Jurgen Klopp said he would give both Mignolet and Karius a chance to impress before the international break but Aldridge is in no doubt who he would pick in the crucial North-West derby on Monday week.

“Klopp said he would assess the goalkeeping situation during the international break having given both players an opportunity. And for me, I’d say while Karius could come good one day, Mignolet should be between the sticks at this moment in time.”

It will be interesting to see what Klopp decides. On one hand he won’t want to shake his new keeper’s confidence by leaving him out, but on the other hand: would Mignolet be better equipped to handle the pressure of playing in a hotly contested derby match?
