Liverpool striker Danny Ings could have been plying his trade in Portugal this season, rather than remaining with the Reds, according to Dominic King in the Daily Mail.

Ings has suffered a cruel setback to his return to first team football after suffering another serious knee injury, this time to his right leg rather than left which he injured last season, meaning he will miss the rest of this campaign.

Things could have been quite different for Ings however as the Daily Mail believe that Sporting Lisbon approached Liverpool about a possible loan deal to help the player continue his injury recovery. Stoke, Leicester City and Sunderland were also said to have enquired about Ings’s availability.

Instead the 24 year old opted to stay at Anfield and work his way back to fitness playing for Liverpool’s Under 23 side. His first appearance for the first team however led to another serious injury after the striker challenged and jolted his right knee when tackling defender Kevin Wimmer in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the EFL Cup last week.
