Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum says that manager Jurgen Klopp was very positive about the team’s performance against Southampton despite the 0-0 draw  at the weekend.

Roberto Firmino, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane had the team’s best chances against the Saints on Saturday, and the Reds slipped behind Chelsea in the league standings after Antonio Conte’s side won 1-0 at Middlesbrough yesterday. Wijnaldum was upbeat about the game when speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match:

“The manager was positive. He said ‘You must not be negative about the game, we did a lot of good things, we created a lot of chances and stopped them creating chances’. In the second half we played in their half. He said the only thing is we didn’t score, but sometimes in these games you can concede a goal and lose the game so the result was not that bad. The manager is a positive guy, a positive manager and he was satisfied with the game we played. We have to keep it in perspective.”

It is clear that Klopp is trying to keep the atmosphere positive in the dressing room despite the team dropping points, and the Reds will be hoping that the positivity and standard of performance carries on when they face league strugglers Sunderland on Saturday.

David Moyes’ side dragged themselves off the foot of the table after a 3-0 home win against Hull City at the weekend, and will be a tougher opposition to break down than they might have been a few weeks ago. Still, with the firepower at the disposal of the Reds, they will expect to break the deadlock at Anfield after drawing a blank against Southampton.
