Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes the current Reds squad is mentally stronger than the team Jurgen Klopp had last season.

On a number of occasions last campaign, such as against Newcastle, Watford and Swansea, Liverpool dropped points against opponents they were expected to win against but writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Aldo feels that Klopp has given his players a steelier edge, which will be vital heading into the match at the weekend against a good Southampton side:

“This Liverpool team looks a lot stronger mentally than we’ve seen in other years. I don’t think complacency will be an issue. Not with Klopp in charge.”

“So they won’t take Southampton lightly, no chance at all. But they won’t fear them either; we’ve seen already this season that Liverpool on form can win any game, home or away.”

Last season’s match against the Saints was testament to the players’ past mental fragility and defensive frailties. 2-0 up at half time, the Reds lost the match 3-2 after a double from Sadio Mane.

The replacement of Dejan Lovren by Martin Skrtel at half time by Klopp proved pivotal as the Slovakian struggled to get up with the pace of the game. The match also seemingly sealed the defender’s fate with the 31 year old being shipped off to Fenerbahce over the summer.
