According to ESPN Brazil, the Reds are interested in signing Santos’ Brazilian midfielder Thiago Maia who has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in the country this season.

The teenager has made 21 appearances this year for the Brazilian Serie A side and is typically a defensive midfielder, so doesn’t score many goals.

In fact, he’s only registered one assist so far this campaign and so his skills very much lie in the defensive sector.

That’s nothing to be downplayed, though, as our midfield could seriously do with an out-and-out deep lying player to help break up opposition attacks.

Whilst the likes of Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum are our most prominent players to perhaps be asked to play that role all three of them would rather get forward then hold back.

It would make sense to go for Maia, then, as we’d then have an extra option to play a different way if needed.

Would you take Maia, Reds? Let us know below!
