When The Mirror linked the Reds with Mario Gotze a few days ago it was certainly a case of ‘here we go again.’

The young German international moved to Dortmund at the start of the season, of course, but has not really performed there since and that seems to be what prompted such a rumour surrounding us to occur.

However, in light of his poor displays and evidently stalling career the excitement around signing him potentially isn’t really there at the moment and Lothar Matthaus’ latest comments have only compounded that.

Commenting in BILD (via ESPN,) the German legend has said that the midfielder’s career could lie in China if he cannot find form at Dortmund – surely something we need to consider.

Matthaus said:

“To be honest, and even if it might sound rude: If Gotze does not make it at Dortmund, he must go to China.”

Hardly a glowing review of a player who used to be one of the most highly-rated around, then.

And, with that in mind, we’re not sure whether he’s going to be worth the risk anymore.
