We were reminded of how much we love Xabi Alonso this week as the Spanish midfielder confirmed his retirement from football in his usual classy style.
One of the finest players to wear the famous Red shirt in recent times, the midfield metronome was a class act and we doubt we’ll never get over the fact Rafa sold him in the end.
Indeed, such was his impact on the way we played and controlled games you could argue that from his departure we have never really recovered – we certainly haven’t had such a potent and talented side since his day.
We also think that, given his world-class nature, he’s almost impossible to truly replace but we do think there are a couple of young talents emerging that could just do the job.
So, as we bid farewell to one of our most favourite recent Reds stars, we’ve taken a look at two who could at last replace him…
