As quoted by Sky Sports, Reds legend and new Liverpool U18 manager Steven Gerrard has revealed the kind of impact he is hoping to have on the young players at the club.

The former midfielder and captain retired from football earlier this season, of course, and had been working in the Reds’ coaching set-up – learning the ropes ahead of a specific role.

And now he has been given the chance to show what he can do with the U18 side as Neil Critchley moves to work with the U23 team.

For Gerrard, then, it’ll be his first chance to show what he can do and it seems as though he wants to start changing things up soon, with the idea that he removes a lot of the showboating from young players.

He said:

“There is a showboating mentality through academies.

“A lot of kids think they have to do 10 lollipops or Cruyff turns to look good or stand out.

“We all love a bit of skill and talent but the other side of the game is huge. I have to try and prepare these players for careers in the game.”

Gerrard, then, seems set to try and make the players strong all round stars that can do the hard graft as well and we’re certainly pleased to hear that.
