As per the club’s official website today, Dejan Lovren has signed a new deal to stay at Liverpool until 2021 – as the Reds plan for potential Champions League football.

Signed in 2014/15 by Brendan Rodgers, the Croatian defender has had to improve over the ensuing seasons and, to be fair, largely has done.

Indeed, this year has been his best to date alongside Joel Matip but there is still some way to go before we can truly feel comfortable with him playing week in, week out.

Jurgen Klopp, though, must have seen enough in the former Southampton man to suggest that he is going to get better and there certainly does seem to be potential for a partnership with Matip.

And, with Champions League football potentially on the horizon, it does make sense to keep core squad players at the club.
