Why comparing Brendan Rodgers to Jurgen Klopp makes no sense at Liverpool

I’m generally a positive person, so I’m going to try and put a positive spin on a negative situation right now, as well as deliver some truths that are not in keeping with the Twitter slamming, doomsday environment we currently reside in.

A lot has been made of our last two coaches’ record’s over the last year, and increasingly more so at the moment, that they are identical or even that Jurgen Klopp’s is worse than Brendan Rodgers’.

A week, though, is a long time in football, and two years is a life time.

These comparisons are made (and by a lot of our favourite pundits sadly) to suggest we are no better off than when Rodgers was in charge. They seem to omit some glaring facts I’d like to remind you of to lift your no doubt manic depression, over the current state of affairs at Anfield. So before you start screaming ‘Klopp out’, ‘Let’s go and burn Fenway Park to the ground’, or reach for that tenth beer whilst gently sobbing, consider these seven points:

* Rodgers’ record included the amazing season of 2013/14 , one we haven’t had under Klopp (yet, hopefully) so that boosts his statistics.

* Rodgers wasn’t fired for his overall record, he was fired for his record towards to the end,  during the decline.

* We won just one game of our nine in the 2015/16 season before he was fired after an abysmal draw with Everton.

* We lost 6-1 to Stoke (hardly the same as losing 5-0 to City with ten men (the 11th being our best player)) on the last game of the 2014/15 season, when he probably should have been fired.

* He looked lost, clueless, and handled the Steven Gerrard debacle poorly

* He performed embarrassingly in the Champions League with no concept of what he was doing.

* He paid actual money (at least over £10 and 50p if i remember correctly!!) for Mario Balotelli!

Admittedly he lost Suarez, but Klopp managed to keep, by hook or by crook, Coutinho.

Things had taken a nose dive, big time. And if we went back, we’d be going back to that, not the 2013/14 season.

Klopp is a better manager than Rodgers, and has succeeded at the very top. Rodgers was broken, and bereft of ideas diving head first into the abyss. The two can not be compared. Klopp’s record needs to be compared to Rodgers’ final 6 months to have a true picture of ‘Are we better off?’ and the answer is yes!

We are in the Champions League, and have already drawn against an excellent side and will probably progress to the knockout stages. We spank, or at least don’t lose, to all the big teams (City aside last time out.) We’ve bought in Mane and Salah which has given us one hell of an attack – not Balotelli, Benteke, and broken Sturridge.

We just need some steel in midfield, and a world class centre-back (which we did, albeit naively, try very hard to do). We get Naby Keita, the best player in the Bundesliga, next year and if you add to that (which you’ve got to think we will) a proper defender, we will have a stunning team that can win things. Not to mention we got to the Europa League final too! And the bench is looking better than it’s ever done. Can you remember a second string we put out in the Rodgers era? I try not to.

There’s a lark waiting for us all, and his song will be sweet and silver! Keep calm and carry on!
