Premier League giants, Liverpool have been speculated to be interest in former Real Madrid shot-stopper, Iker Casillas, according to reports from El Pais – via ESPN.

The 2010 World Cup-winning captain has spent the last two seasons at FC Porto in the Portuguese league, after he left Real Madrid in an emotional farewell in 2015.

The Spaniard has been a regular name at Porto between the sticks over the past season or so, but has been limited to the bench, after Jose Sa was trusted over Casillas by manager Sérgio Conceição. With Casillas down to the bench, many reports have speculated that the 36-year-old might leave the club, to find regular playing time. Casillas’ contract at the Portuguese club will expire in June next year, and he may look for a club where he could regularly play.

Reports also confirm that Liverpool are interested to cash in on the opportunity, and sign the veteran. However, they face competition from fellow Premier League side, Newcastle United for the goalkeeper.

What might be the question is is Casillas the solution to Liverpool’s problem? With Simon Mignolet, Danny Ward and Loris Karius being the options for Klopp, two have been very inconsistent to say the least and Ward hasn’t really played, and the German boss might want a better option between the sticks.

As much as Liverpool have been explosive higher up the pitch, their defence has been lacking. As a result, Klopp can welcome the arrival of an experienced ‘keeper to protect the goal.

Moreover, the problems don’t end there, as Liverpool’s defensive midfield have not yet properly protected the back-line from opposition’s attacking waves. Klopp had opted for Emre Can and Jordan Henderson in that position, but none of them were able to do the job properly.

Having someone with a vast experience and talent as Casillas will be a huge boost for Klopp, as it will add more seniority to the line-up. Even though this may not solve Liverpool’s defensive problems overnight, it might be a smaller step towards a larger solution.
