Liverpool have recalled Nigeria U23 international Taiwo Awoniyi from his loan stint with Belgian side Royal Excel Mouscron prematurely after the youngster suffered a season-ending injury, according to The Anfield Edition.

The highly-rated forward boasted a solid return of four goals in seven appearances for Mouscron this season but will not be able to represent the Belgian side again this term after a serious hamstring injury brought an early end to his campaign.

It’s a massive blow for the 20-year-old, who was planning on a late push for Nigeria’s World Cup squad and was hoping to earn a senior debut for the African side ahead of this summer’s tournament in Russia, where the Super Eagles tackle Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.

Jurgen Klopp is keen on the young forward but another loan stint is planned for next season, with opportunities at Anfield likely to be limited due to competition from Dominic Solanke, Roberto Firmino, Danny Ings, Rhian Brewster and others.

Awoniyi’s injury means he won’t be able to feature until the early stages of next season, meaning he won’t have a chance to prove himself to Klopp, and Liverpool’s plan is for him to gain experience at a higher level than he did at Mouscron this term.
