Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp faces a stern task to improve his midfield ranks this summer, particularly with the imminent loss of Germany international Emre Can.

The 24-year-old has been reluctant to extend his deal at Anfield, leaving the door open for a free transfer to occur in just a few months- and his recent injury problem means he may have already played his last match for the Reds.

Amongst the names being touted as potential midfield targets for Liverpool this summer is that of Barcelona veteran Ivan Rakitic, who could be deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou following the La Liga leader’s acquisition of Arthur from Gremio.

However, Mundo Deportivo claim Liverpool will face immense competition in the market for the 30-year-old Croatia international as they state recently crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are in the hunt.

The Bavarians, also in the semi-finals of the Champions League, are said to be eyeing a mammoth swoop worth £70m for the former Schalke man to bring him to the Allianz Arena this summer.
