Tony Cascarino has urged Gareth Bale to avoid joining Manchester United as it would be a terrible move for him and suggested Liverpool are a club he should consider.

The Sky Sports pundit in the wake of the Champions League final claimed that the Real Madrid attacker, who earns £350,000-a-week as stated by The Guardian previously, should think about joining the Reds, Manchester City or Tottenham as those three clubs would be a better fit for him.

Cascarino revealed that he believes Man United would be able to offer Bale £500,000-a-week wages, but that he needs to be playing for one of the best attacking sides in the Premier League, rather than move for the money.

“Gareth Bale will be 29 by the time he plays his next competitive match and he is right when he says he needs to be playing every week,” wrote the pundit in his column for The Times, under the subheading “Bale should avoid United like the plague.”

“Manchester United could match his current wages, or even give him a raise, but that would be a terrible move for Bale unless José Mourinho can guarantee that he will play him as a centre forward.

“Playing wide for Mourinho would be the worst thing that could happen for Bale.

“United would be paying him £500,000 a week to track back with full backs. If he played up front, ahead of Romelu Lukaku – and I think he has the qualities to do that – that could work.

“Otherwise, he should be prepared to give up a bit of money and think about joining one of the three Premier League teams that play the best attacking football: Manchester City, Liverpool or Tottenham.”

OPINION

Bale is a world-class footballing superstar who the Reds witnessed the power of firsthand on Saturday. While he may not be Liverpool supporters’ favourite superstar after his goal scoring antics in the Champions League final, fans would quickly welcome him to Anfield. Don Balon previously reported in May that Jurgen Klopp’s side had tabled an offer, only for Bale to personally prefer a move back to Tottenham instead. However the Spanish football outlet aren’t the most reliable of sources, so that doesn’t rule out the wing wizard making a jump to the Reds this summer. If fit and injury free, Bale would easily light up the Reds’ already impressive attacking force and could see Klopp’s side steam towards the Premier League title next season. The 28-year-old has managed to score 21 goals in 39 appearances in his most recent campaign for Madrid and those numbers along with Mohamed Salah’s goal return at the club is a frightening thought. It’s just a question of how much Bale will cost that will affect whether a deal is worthwhile for the Reds as they have to prioritise strengthening other options of their team this summer.
