Football fans have taken to Twitter to deliver mixed verdicts after Liverpool co-owner John W Henry had a dig at Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho.

The Fenway Sports Group principal shareholder told AP News that the former Anfield favourites will be sat watching on their backsides while Liverpool take on Real Madrid in Saturday’s Champions League final.

The Barcelona pair were eliminated from Europe’s elite competition at the quarter-final stage as their team failed to progress as far as their former colleagues.

“They’ll be watching this weekend and could have been playing,” Henry said, when asked about the attacking duo by AP News.

Suarez quit Liverpool for Barcelona in a £70million transfer in 2015 and Coutinho followed him to the Spanish giants in January of this year for a fee of £142million.

Liverpool made huge profits from both sales, but supporters subsequently criticised Henry and his board of directors for their lack of ambition.

Fans of the Merseysiders and other clubs were split on Henry’s mockery of Suarez and Coutinho, with some praising his outspokenness and others mocking him given how many trophies the Uruguayan has won at Camp Nou.
