Michael Owen has predicted Liverpool to defeat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League final but admits the game could be any score.

The former Reds forward shared that he was having to choose between his heart and his head when it comes to Saturday’s game, before eventually backing Jurgen Klopp’s side to win.

Owen eventually settled on the Reds as he believes that Real Madrid’s lack of pace in defence would be exploited by the Merseyside giants.

“All season I have thought Los Blancos were the team to beat in the Champions League and any side who have knocked out PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich deserve to take their place in the final,” said Owen, in his predictions for BetVictor.

“They have not faced a side, however, with the pace, energy, skill and passion of this Jürgen Klopp-inspired Liverpool side and I expect to see Jordan Henderson pick up a sixth European Cup/Champions League Trophy for the Reds in Kiev.

“Mo Salah (10), Roberto Firmino (10) and Sadio Mané (9) have scored 29 goals between them in the Champions League this season and the Reds front three can again be the difference between the sides in Ukraine, the Whites are a great team but they are not blessed with great pace in their back four and I expect Liverpool to exploit that weakness in what promises to be a cracker.”

“If there is an early goal, I honestly believe it could be any score.

“My head says Real Madrid but my heart says Liverpool, on this occasion, the heart rules the head – 2-1 to the Reds.”

OPINION

Owen is clearly reluctant to pick a side in the Champions League final this year, maybe because he played for both but also as it’s a hard fixture to predict. The pundit is clearly certain that there will be goals though, even if he only predicts that the scoreline will be 2-1. Owen’s remarks suggest that he could easily see the game being packed with goals due to all the attacking talent on show. It’s hard to argue with that opinion especially when both sides like to go all out-of-attack in order to cover any defensive frailties they may have. It’ll be interesting to see who scores first in Saturday’s game as that will be key. Confidence can easily be shattered if a team falls behind, so it’s important for both sides to start on the front foot. Hopefully Mohamed Salah’s rampant form will continue in the final as that could be the difference. After scoring 44 goals in 51 games across all competitions for the Reds this season, no side can be confident about stopping the 25-year-old winger.
