Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has revealed the major doubts he had over his move to Anfield during his first few months at the club.

The Scotland international flyer played in just three of the Reds’ first 15 games this season as Alberto Moreno impressed, but an injury to the Spaniard allowed the 24-year-old a chance which he grasped with both hands.

Robertson has gone on to become a key player for Jurgen Klopp and a fan favourite at Anfield, and is set to line up against Real Madrid in the Champions League final this Saturday.

In an interview with The Times, he said: “I don’t go on social media much but people were saying, ‘Maybe he is not the manager’s signing. That’s why he is not playing.’ That was hard as well. There were times when you go home and have a bit of time to yourself and, of course, you think, ‘Have I made the wrong decision?’ I had a good few options after Hull went down, but none was as big as this.

“I was right to come to Liverpool, but at that time when it is tough you do think, ‘Should I have gone to another club where I could be playing every week? Maybe I have made this step too early.’ You start doubting yourself. A lot of people say it but what goes on in your head is the hardest thing to control.”

OPINION

It is hardly surprising to hear that Robertson had massive doubts about his decision to join Liverpool last summer. The Scot looked so far on the fringes to begin with and it was a stroke of hard luck on Moreno’s part that handed him the chance he needed. It is interesting to think what position the 24-year-old would be in now if Moreno had never suffered that injury. Robertson could very well have been considering an exit from Anfield this summer if that had not happened, which is crazy to think considering his brilliant form over the last few months. The left-sided flyer will be key to the Reds’ hopes in Kiev come Saturday, with Zinedine Zidane hinting that Gareth Bale may get the nod to start on the right. That will give Robertson a handful, and make his job on the night a hugely tough ask as the club go in search of a sixth European Cup success.
